Layered Zirconia Crowns & Bridges

A high-strength zirconia core with hand-layered porcelain - the combination for cases that need both strength and convincing incisal character.

What we offer & who it is for

For practices and laboratories outsourcing anterior aesthetic cases where monolithic optics are not enough, and long-span bridges needing strength plus character.

Practical guidance for your prescriptions

  • Photo communication matters more here: smile view, retracted view and shade-tab close-up drive the cutback design.
  • Cutback design is confirmed with you before porcelain application on complex shades.
  • Deep overbite or limited interocclusal space cases: check that porcelain thickness stays within limits - we flag it at design.
  • For the highest anterior optics on single units, compare with E.max before choosing layered zirconia.

Reference figures are widely accepted industry values for the material/system class - case-specific parameters are confirmed at design. Reviewed by the Istar case coordination team.

Indications & limits

Veneering porcelain on any substrate can chip if framework design or occlusion is wrong - we verify support thickness and occlusal scheme at design stage, and recommend monolithic for heavy bruxers.

Character replication is only as good as the references: photos with a shade tab, or a model of the reference tooth, are required for guaranteed matching.

What to submit with your case

  • STL scan or impression, opposing arch, bite registration
  • Rx form with shade and margin design
  • Reference photos with shade tab in frame (daylight)
  • Notes on the character you want copied or avoided
  • Model or photo of the contralateral/reference tooth

How the case is made & checked

Intake: aesthetic requirements confirmed back in writing
Framework design with verified support thickness
Cut-back and hand layering (dentin / enamel / incisal)
Custom staining and glazing to prescription
Inspection: fit, contacts, occlusion, shade under standardised light
Independent release; comparison photos against the tab on request

Shade and character are checked under standardised light against the approved references by a technician who did not make the case.

Production time & shipping

Layered cases are scheduled with the ceramic department; the plan is confirmed at case acceptance. Design approval time is excluded from production time; shipping is separate.

Real cases

Anterior bridge with contralateral tooth replication

Framework designed around the aesthetic zone, porcelain layered to replicate the contralateral incisor's translucency band and texture from reference photos.

Frequently asked questions

Does the porcelain on layered zirconia chip?
It can on any substrate if the framework or occlusion is wrong. We verify support thickness at design stage; for heavy bruxers we recommend monolithic instead.
Can you copy the contralateral tooth?
Yes - send a photo or model of the reference tooth and the ceramic team will replicate morphology, texture and translucency.
How do you reduce the risk of porcelain chipping on layered zirconia?
Three controls: framework design rules (minimum thickness and supported porcelain thickness), porcelain built within its firing parameters, and a final occlusal check in the design preview. Full-contour areas that would need thick porcelain are kept in zirconia.
When should I choose layered zirconia over E.max?
Layered zirconia wins when you need both strength and aesthetics: anterior bridges, connectors, or high-stress aesthetic-zone cases. E.max remains excellent for single anteriors on healthy stumps. Send the case and we will confirm with reasoning.
How is the aesthetic communication different for layered work?
Cutback design means the ceramist builds incisal effects by hand, so photos matter more: a smile view, a retracted view, and adjacent teeth with a shade tab. We confirm the cutback design with you before porcelain application on complex shades.
Can you match an existing restoration's surface texture?
Yes - send a close-up photo of the reference tooth or restoration showing surface texture and glaze level. Our ceramists replicate stippling, perikymata and lustre level; extreme matches may be confirmed with a photo of the finished unit before dispatch.
